Get Fresh with Al Brown

Back to on the table

What better way to celebrate the regions of New Zealand than discovering local produce and cooking up a storm with Al Brown while listening to the best fresh new music from around the country?

In Get Fresh Al chooses the best local produce from each region and turns it into something magical, working out a menu that he feels epitomises that area — serving up three iconic, delicious recipes: an entrée, main and dessert. As he explains, ‘It was very subjective, and a wonderful process for a chef to go through. A journey of discovery, unearthing the jewels or the surprises of each province, all the while trying to formulate a menu that I was going to cook at the end of my visit.’

In an exciting addition to his latest book, Al Brown has teamed up with Mike Chunn of Play it Strange — a trust encouraging young New Zealanders to develop interests and skills in songwriting and musical performance — to make a special compilation CD of songs from local bands. Play them as you read the book and cook the recipes and get into the regional mood while hearing some of New Zealand’s most promising talent. The CD also includes the wonderful Fat Freddy’s Drop tune ‘The Nod’.

The tracks were hand-picked to go alongside this loving portrait of regional New Zealand – the perfect song for each region. Al takes us on a journey from north to south visiting: Northland, Coromandel, South Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa, Marlborough, Canterbury, Central Otago, Dunedin and Southland.

Get Fresh is available in hardback for $60 and you can purchase a copy from any good bookseller or here on Al's website.
